Tea for Teaching is a podcast series centered on teaching and learning in higher education that first launched in 2017 in relationship to the work we (John Kane and Rebecca Mushtare) were doing together in the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at the State University of New York at Oswego.

Prior to the summer of 2017, podcasting had not been project contemplated or considered. John had been invited as a guest on a podcast in the summer of 2017 and declined that request several times—even suggesting other people that would be good guests. He finally consented and found the experience to be surprisingly enjoyable. Rebecca listened to that episode along with many other podcasts during 2017 while spending time with her newborn daughter. We shared these experiences with each other and quickly realized that podcasting could help us provide more professional development resources for our part-time faculty.

We began planning this a podcast in October 2017 and released our first episode in November 2017. We’ve released episodes every Wednesday at 6am since then (with a short hiatus in July 2022 due to unexpected medical issues – a car backed into John in a parking lot in Durham, breaking his leg).

Neither of us had created podcasts before and had limited experience with audio editing. We’ve learned a lot along the way (including all of the things we should have done before getting started) and have created this guide to help others get up and running quickly and sustainably.

Tea for Teaching has been a remarkably fun journey, allowing us to have in-depth conversations with many colleagues, including some of the people whose work has shaped our paths as educators. We hope your own podcast journey will be just as fruitful.
