3 Copyright and Licensing
Rebecca Mushtare
Before you release your first episode consider who you will list as the publisher. Will it be you as the initiator of the podcast? Will it the institution or organization you work with. The hosts and the publisher can be different, but do not have to be. Apple Podcasts labels the publisher of the content “the artist.”
Similarly it is important to consider who the copyright holder is so that others can properly credit and cite the podcast. Is creating this podcast part of your daily work? If so, the podcast copyright may belong to the organization you work for unless another agreement has been made and documented. Be sure to include this critical information on your podcast website and in the credits of individual episodes.
You’ll also want to consider if you’ll license your work under a Creative Commons License or similar. Be aware that to use a creative commons license the copyright holder would need to have the right to license all of the materials in the podcast. For example, we purchased a license for our music that prevents us from licensing our podcast under a Creative Commons License.
